Edmonton Oilers Trade Deadline Preview

With the trade deadline approaching in just over a month, there's a few questions surrounding the Oilers current roster situation. The team has just over $2,200,000 in cap space heading into the deadline according to CapFriendly, but have a few big contracts that could be sent out. We saw last deadline how Ken Holland is able to make things work even with tight finances after he traded Tyson Barrie to Nashville to bring in Mattias Ekholm who has been nothing short of spectacular for the Oilers since his arrival. Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal believes one of the teams biggest needs heading into the March 8th deadline is adding a bottom-six center with size and that excels in the faceoff circle, naming Nic Dowd of the Washington Capitals and Colton Sissons of the Nashville Predators both as potential targets. Edmontons defensive play has been fantastic since naming Paul Coffey as the defense coach but there still are concerns with Cody Ceci taking up almost 20 minutes a game in the top four alongside Darnell Nurse, but with a rough market for right-handed defensemen shaping up with only a select number of available players it might be more beneficial to keep Ceci. Another question is goaltending. Skinner has played lights out since his horrid start earlier this season, but can we trust him to hold down the fort come playoffs after what happened last year? If Skinner goes cold or suffers an injury that would leave Calvin Pickard as the starter with either Olivier Rodrigue or Jack Campbell backing him up. Some notable players that the team has been connected to lately are Sean Walker, Adam Boqvist, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jordan Eberle. Neither Walker nor Boqvist quite fit the "big shutdown defenseman" criteria that the Oilers should be looking for, and both Fleury and Eberle will gain a ton of interest from other contenders. According to multiple sources, Sean Walker still remains one of the likeliest players to end up in Oil Country, gaining a lot of traction with recent rumours. Edmonton should be one of the most interesting teams to watch at the deadline this year, with players like Ceci and Campbell that could be moved, along with prospects like Philip Broberg and high picks that the Oilers currently hold.
